Pain in the chest can be an underlying symptom from something minor like acid reflux, or it can be a warning sign for a condition more serious, like a heart attack or stroke.
There is no way to accurately self-determine what is causing your chest pain, which is why it is important to visit an emergency room immediately. Seek help as soon as possible if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Pressure, tightness or a squeezing in your chest
- Aching sensation in your chest or arms that spreads to your neck, jaw or back
- Shortness of breath
- Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness
A heart attack is an emergency medical condition that occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked or stopped. Blockages form when there is a buildup of plaque, normally formed from excess fat and cholesterol. Heart attacks can be fatal. If you think someone is experiencing a heart attack, call 911 right away.
